suddenly
there is a down pouring
of rain
and I am afraid
as nature’s power
is known
I close my eyes
afraid to watch
afraid of the power
but you comfort me
you laugh and say
‘it’s only a shower’
I look at you
your eyes sparkle with delight
you enjoy it
and you say
‘look how much beauty
nature’s power holds’
you convinced me
I agree
I watch the beauty of it all
again I look at you,
the lightning lights your face
down your cheek
runs a tear
I am surprised
‘Why are you crying?’
I ask
puzzled at your mood
‘I wish it could last forever:
the rain.’
you say
I laugh
but you’re serious
‘it can’t rain all the time.’
I reply
not knowing what to say
‘I know’
you say flatly
as the rain stops
as suddenly as it started
and it is gone
nature’s power
is just a
memory
